Happy Tails

It is so rewarding to find a good home for one of our rescued animals. To see them happy and safe makes all our efforts worthwhile. To see the joy it brings to a family when their new pet is delivered to them is so exciting. Through our years of rescue work we have met wonderful people that have opened their hearts and homes to these precious animals that deserve a second chance at life. We look forward to many more happy ending as we continue to help the homeless animals in our community. Though we work hard it is the support we get from others that allows us to continue making our dreams come true.

OUR FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT LOVING TOUCH RESCUE
WAS THAT OF
OUR BELOVED MASCOT.

Henry the night we rescued him (picture left)
Henry with his new friends Dutchess and Schmooey (picture right).

Henry - a senior Norweign Elkhound was rescued in the winter of 2000 after a young boy tied him to a fence and ran away. It was a bitter cold winter bitter cold night, there was snow on the ground and there was poor Henry trying to get someone's attention by barking. Luckily a neighbor, who witnessed this happening, immediately called us. When Henry was picked up by Zulma he was in shock, he was disoriented and shivering. The following day he was taken to the vet for a a check-up. He had a terrible ear infection and appeared to be badly neglected. We did find a great home for Henry unfortunately it did not work out. Henry was returned to us. He spent many months in boarding as we tried to find him a new home. UPDATE: Sadly, one of our family pets passed away, a male dog named Lucky. At this time we knew that our female dogs would accept Henry so he came to live his life our with us (Doreen & Paul). We loved Henry dearly, he was a wonderful addition to our family. Henry finally felt loved and he was so happy with us. We lost Henry 6 months later to Cancer. We did all we could but he just couldn't hold on. We were all heartbroken when Henry left us.

Lady

This adorable, loveable beagle mix followed a woman home from work one evening. We received a call for help & quickly went to see what we could do for this lost dog. We desperately tried to find her guardian but we were not successful. It took a long time to find the perfect home for this active, fence jumper & escape artist. We were concerned for her safety & new that she needed a very secure home. UPDATE: We did find a wonderful home for Lady, she is now called Lady LuLu! She shares her home with a feline companion.

Prancer

One of our members received a call about a dog that was tied to a parking meter on a very busy road in Flushing. It appeared that someone found her & tied her there to keep her safe. Our volunteer ran over to pick up the dog. We searched for this beautiful dog's owner but could not find one. After several weeks of boarding found a home for her with a family that was looking for a companion for their male Husky. After meeting with the family we knew this would be the perfect home for Prancer. UPDATE: Prancer was adopted and fit right in. Here she is relaxing in her new home.

A.J.

One of our members received a call about a cat that was found stuffed in a paper bag & left with a pile of garbage inside a Flushing apt. building. Luckily someone found him & called us for help. The cat was named after his rescuer. A.J. was a very friendly cat but he was partially blind which made it difficult to find him a home. A very kind aunt of a fellow rescuer was nice enough to take A.J. into her home & make him part of her family. She loved A.J. dearly but her health was failing & she was unable to care for her family of cats . She asked if we would please take A.J. back & keep him with us. We agreed and A.J. lived the rest of his life out with us.

Rocky

(a.k.a. Buckwheat)
We received a call from a lady that fed stray cats in the Jamaica area. She said that she saw an injured dog that needed help. Paul asked a fellow rescuer (John) for help with rescuing the dog & they were off. Rocky was found laying in a pile of debris & broken glass. At first it appeared that he might be aggressive but once he saw that he was going to be helped he was fine. On Christmas Eve Rocky was taken to an emergency clinic in New Jersey. He suffered a broken leg and had to wear a cast for several weeks. UPDATE: Rocky was adopted shortly after & now lives in Manhattan with his new dad & a parrot. Here he is with dad.

Daisy

This adorable American Eskimo was rescued from Long Island City. She was a stray, she was scared & took shelter between two garages. We were asked to help this poor dog & we did. It took some time to secure & lift her from between the garages. She was very nervous but trusted us enough to come with us. We were lucky to find a foster home with a fellow rescuer who took a real liking to Daisy & helped her come around. He helped to find her a wonderful home in New Jersey. The couple that adopted Daisy already had an American Eskimo & were looking for a companion for her. The girls hit it off and Daisy soon became part of the family.

Tabitha
This tiny kitten was found by a good Samaritan, her leg was crushed and she was crying out in pain. We were asked to help. Our vet treated the kitten but was concerned that the leg might have to be amputated if it got infected. Tabitha remained at the vet's office for several weeks, she did not need an amputation. UPDATE: Tabitha's rescuer offered to foster her until she was back on her feet. It didn't take long for her to fall in love with this sweet kitten. Tabitha now lives with her new mom in Flushing.

Molly

This shy, gentle Cocker Spaniel was found in the middle of a busy road on Long Island. We took her to our vet for an examination & were told that Molly may have been used for breeding may have been kept in a cage by the way her legs were bent. After hearing that we decided to not even look for an owner. UPDATE: Molly has been adopted. She is well cared for & loved.

Bessie

Bessie was abandoned in Kissena Park, in Flushing. Neighbors & park workers took a liking to her & chipped in to pay for her vet care. Bessie was one of the lucky dogs that got to live in a foster home until a permanent home was found. UPDATE: Bessie has been adopted by a wonderful couple who will be living on a farm. Bessie will have lots of room to run & play & will be living with other animals

LOST CAT

Max

Bay Ridge Brooklyn
(a.k.a.Dominick) - was about 5 weeks old when a kind Whitestone resident found him between 2 fences in her backyard. He was all alone & crying for help. He was very skinny, just adorable & very affectionate. This sweet boy stayed with us until a home came along. Max was adopted & lived in Brooklyn with his mom & big feline brother Alex. Alex had recently lost his companion to a serous illness & he was very lonely & sad. When Max joined the family Alex bonded to him quickly & they became friends.

UPDATE - on 8/12/04 Max got out of a bedroom window. He was lost in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. We went to the area several times & distributed hundreds of flyers but had no luck finding him. We contacted vet offices, shelters & rescue groups but Max was never found. We just pray that he was picked up by someone & is safe. Here is the description on Max's Lost flyer.
Max - 2 years old Male - neutered Slim to medium size. Black with white chest, white chin, & white front & back paws *White spot between eyes.

Gucci

(a.k.a. Goldie) This sweet girl has a sad story. She was first rescued back in 1995 when she was found with a broken leg in 100 degree weather on the streets of College Point. She was immediately taken to the vet where her leg was set in a cast. She was lucky enough to be placed in a foster home where she remained until her leg was healed. Her foster dad took good care of her and bragged about nice she was "filling out" . Little did he know that he would come home to a room full of puppies. Not even the vet knew that Gucci was pregnant, it was a shock to everyone. After the puppies found homes Gucci was adopted to a co-worker that lived on Long Island. It was around the holidays and they wanted to add a family member to the home. We delivered Gucci to her new home on Christmas Eve where she lived for the next 8 years. The family was aware that Gucci had separation anxiety but somehow they managed to work thing out. Gucci had a setback when a family member was hospitalized and she was forced to spend many hours alone in the house. She was so bad that her family was afraid to leave her alone. Gucci was returned to us but it wasn't long before a kind animal lover fell head over heals in love with her & asked if she could adopt her. Gucci was nervous & sad when we first took her back but after being with her new Mom she has gained her confidence back & little by little is overcoming her separation problem. Gucci is now living with her new mom in Pennsylvania.

Lenny

This handsome boy was rescued on a very cold winter night from the Long Island City area. He was found running through the streets by a resident who we recently helped with 2 other dogs from the same area. Lenny was young and very adoptable. He bonded quickly with Zulma, who had picked him up the night he was rescued. Lenny was placed in 3 homes & returned each time. He hated the last home so much that he actually broke out in hives. It hurt us to see that Lenny was so sad in each home we had picked out for him. UPDATE: Lenny is now living with Zulma & he is very happy. He also enjoys the company of other rescued dogs & cats.

Kit

This kitty was found on the street by a kind family. His eye was injured & needed medical attention. We had many cats to care for but this little guy needed help badly. Kit's right eye was so damaged it had to be removed. After surgery we fostered him & tried to find him a good home. Kit had another problem, he liked to mark his territory. UPDATE: With all his problems we decided that the best thing for him would be to just stay with us. Kit is doing well & has adjusted to the loss of one eye.

Trudy
This tiny , skinny, kitten was covered in fleas when she was rescued from the streets of Corona. I'll never forget the blood that dripped off her body when I gave her a bath. She was so nervous she wouldn't look at me. With lots of TLC she came around quickly but was much too frightened to be adopted. UPDATE: Trudy trusts us, she has friends & is now part of our family.

Gracie

(a.k.a. Dixie) This sweet girl followed a young boy home from school. The boy's mother did not want a dog so she attempted to drop her off at a local vet's office. We happen to be at the vet's office that day. When we heard the story we immediately took the dog over hoping to find her owner. She was not wearing a collar & ID. The only thing around her neck was a piece of broken rope. We never did find an owner but we did find her a new family to love. UPDATE: Gracie was adopted and shares her new home with her mom and feline friends.

Chester

This handsome senior Husky was found in Farmingdale, L.I. by an animal lover who could not take him into her home because of her 3 dogs. Since the dog was wearing his harness she felt that his owner would be looking for him. He was taken to a local KILL shelter where he patiently waited for his owner to rescue him. Unfortunately his owner was an elderly woman that could no longer care for him & did not want him back. UPDATE: Thanks to a very caring Long Island family this beautiful dog was saved just before he was scheduled to be euthanized. His new name is Chester & he is doing very well with his new family. He even has a brother & sister to spend time with. SENIOR DOGS MAKE WONDERFUL PETS!

BUSTER - RESCUED FROM THE JAMAICA AREA IN FEBRUARY 2001

This boy was so sweet he would have never survived the streets of Jamaica. A fellow rescuer asked for help, we agreed and Buster was removed from the area. We took this skinny pit bull into our care & started searching for a home. After several months in boarding we did find him a foster home. Buster worked out so well that he was adopted shortly after.

As you can see Buster is a very happy dog.
